How to Play Texas Hold'em Poker: A Beginner's Guide
Texas Hold'em is the most popular poker game in the world, and it's easy to learn. Everyone gets two private cards, five shared cards are dealt to the table, and the best five-card hand wins the pot. This guide covers the rules, the betting rounds and the hand rankings, so you can sit down and play in a few minutes.
1. You get 2 private cards. 2. 5 shared cards are dealt in three steps (flop, turn, river). 3. Bet, call, raise or fold each round. 4. The best 5-card hand from your 7 cards wins the pot. See all the full Texas Hold'em rules or the poker hands ranked.

The goal
Win chips by either having the best hand at the end (the showdown) or by making everyone else fold. On PokerX all chips are play money, so you can learn without risking anything.
How a hand works
- Blinds. Two players post forced bets: the small blind and the big blind. This creates a pot to play for. The dealer button moves one seat clockwise every hand.
- Hole cards. Each player receives two private cards face down. First betting round (pre-flop).
- The flop. Three community cards are dealt face up. Second betting round.
- The turn. A fourth community card. Third betting round.
- The river. The fifth and final community card. Final betting round.
- Showdown. Remaining players reveal their cards. The best five-card hand, made from any mix of your two cards and the five on the table, takes the pot. If everyone else folds, the last player wins without showing.
Your options when it's your turn
Check – pass without betting (only if nobody has bet yet).
Call – match the current bet.
Raise – increase the bet; everyone else must call, raise or fold.
All in – bet every chip you have.
On PokerX you have 30 seconds per decision. If the timer runs out you automatically check or fold.
Poker hand rankings (best to worst)

- Straight flush Five cards in a row, all the same suit. A–K–Q–J–10 of one suit is the royal flush.
- Four of a kind Four cards of the same rank, e.g. K♠ K♥ K♦ K♣.
- Full house Three of a kind plus a pair, e.g. 9-9-9-4-4.
- Flush Any five cards of the same suit.
- Straight Five cards in sequence of mixed suits. The ace can be high (10-J-Q-K-A) or low (A-2-3-4-5).
- Three of a kind Three cards of the same rank.
- Two pair Two different pairs, e.g. J-J-5-5.
- One pair Two cards of the same rank.
- High card No combination – the highest card plays.
If two players have the same type of hand, the higher cards win. If hands are exactly equal, the pot is split.
Beginner tips
- Play fewer hands, play them stronger. Folding weak starting hands is the easiest way to improve.
- Position matters. Acting last gives you more information. Play more hands on the button.
- Watch the board. Ask what hands are possible – a flush may be out there if three cards share a suit.
- Don't chase every draw. Compare the cost of calling with the size of the pot.
- Bluff rarely and with a plan. A bluff only works if your story makes sense.
